The custom of sweeping dust has been existent since the Yao and Shun times. People usually clean their houses on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. The characters "尘"(dust) and "陈"(old) are homophonic, thus sweeping dust of the house thoroughly also means sweeping out the old in preparation for the New Year in China. (Hihenan/Zhang Rui)
